Gianni Pitella

Gianni Pittella is born in Lauria on November 19th 1958. In 1979 he was appointed Municipal councillor and in 1980 he became the youngest ever elected Regional Secretary of the Young Socialists.
In 1996 he was elected deputy at the Italian Parliament and appointed member of the Committee on Environment, Public Works and EU Policies.In 1999 he was elected Member of the European Parliament, within the Socialists and Democrats parliamentary group.
Five years later, he gained a second mandate at the European Parliament.Since 1999, he was elected First Vice President of the European Parliament. He has also been appointed member of the ECON and CULT Committees as well as the EMUNI Delegation.
